Marking the way to freedom

The Mission Restaurant evokes a magical, airy twilight somewhere in Latin America, but buried deep in the basement of the building is a cramped tunnel inscribed with a historic, Central New York magic of its own. This building, built in the 1840's and formerly the Syracuse Wesleyan Methodist Church, was also an important 19th century way-station on the Underground Railroad.  The Church members of that time were active in abolitionist activities, publishing, and support for women's rights.  Archaeological research indicates that the tunnel, with its furnace, long shelf for sitting and resting, and slight "jog" to prevent detection, was a refuge for fugitive slaves at a time when Syracuse represented the brink of freedom.  The clay and dirt wall of this tunnel bore the human touch of those who had passed through this haven: several unique and striking faces, now preserved at the Onondaga Historical Association, were sculpted into the wall by different individuals over the course of several years.  Now this bit of subterranean Syracuse history lingers on as a part of the majic of the Mission Restaurant.  ~Dolores Byrnes

our mission

Since 2000, the Mission has prided itself on serving authentically prepared Mexican cuisine while also incorporating dishes from other Latin American countries and the southwestern United States- bringing you a variety of options to choose from…

We use only the freshest ingredients, make it a point to source specialty cheeses, chiles and spices, use local products whenever possible and change our dinner menu seasonally to take advantage of each seasons’ bounty. Everything is made from scratch, all day, every day.

While studying sculpture at Syracuse University, Steve started his culinary career as the kitchen manager at the former Greenhouse Café on the SU hill. There he worked with the future owners of Pastabilities and after a few months of traveling around the country returned to Syracuse to join forces with them in their original location in the SA&K building. After moving the restaurant to Armory Square, Steve stayed on for nearly a decade to oversee their kitchen before forming a partnership to open MOVINO, Syracuse’s first wood-fired pizza restaurant. In 2000, he left to follow his dream of opening his own restaurant, turning the former Wesleyan Methodist church on Columbus Circle into what is now the Mission restaurant.

at the bar

The Mission is proud to serve cocktails made with spirits by Premium Blend, a small, Miami-based company founded by the Santos brothers. The Mission's cocktails use these wine-based spirits to comply with prohibition-era laws that allow us to sell only beer and wine. By increasing the amount of alcohol in these signature cocktails, we think you will be satisfied with the results.
